Triops Longicaudatus Tadpole Starter Kit
Triops Longicaudatus are probably the best known Tadpole Shrimp species on our planet. These Triops, which originated from America have a shell, grow very quickly and swim through the aquarium cheerfully. While other Triops-species focus almost exclusively on digging in the sand, Triops Longicaudatus love it as well to swim around swiftly. Around two weeks after hatching, Triops Longicaudatus can already bury their first Triops-eggs in the sand. Longis, as Longicaudatus fans are calling them affectionately, have a silver shimmering shell and a relatively long tail as compared to the rest of their body. The Longis feel most comfortable in a temperature range of 24 to 28 °Celsius.
In addition to this set, you will need a breeding tank and, depending on the room temperature, a heating element or a heating pad. We recommend that you use a lamp because the light triggers a hatching stimulus in the cysts. In summer, daylight may suffice, however, during other seasons we do not usually reach the light intensity required for the Triops to hatch. The hatching rate will usually much lower, to say the least.
As water, you can utilize distilled as well as rain water or water from the creek. If you use water in which there are already some microorganisms (bacteria), this can well contribute to a higher survival rate of Triops-nauplii.
As the life expectancy of Triops, ranging from 2 to 3 months, is very short in comparison to other animals, they are particularly suitable as pets for children. The lifetime of the Tadpole Shrimp is too short as that children could build a strong bond with them. During their life, Triops bury a lot of eggs in the sand. These eggs can be fished out, dried and deep-frozen and then they can be used to being another breeding approach.
